ABOUT

How an Apprenticeship Works

An apprenticeship is a real job with structured training built in — giving individuals the opportunity to earn while they learn, and employers a practical way to grow skilled, confident staff.

Learning on the job

Apprentices spend 80% of their time in their role, applying skills in a real workplace environment from day one. The remaining 20% is dedicated to off-the-job learning — whether that’s workshops, online study, or mentored development — all directly linked to their apprenticeship standard.

Fully funded through the Apprenticeship Levy

For schools and MATs, apprenticeships are funded through the government’s Apprenticeship Levy, meaning there is no direct cost to the apprentice. Levy-paying employers draw down funding from their digital account, while smaller employers can access government co-investment, making apprenticeships an accessible and cost-effective way to develop your team.

Completing the apprenticeship

Once an apprentice has developed the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required by their standard, they progress to Gateway — the final stage before End-Point Assessment (EPA). Gateway confirms they are ready to be assessed, and the EPA itself is conducted by an independent organisation, ensuring the qualification is nationally recognised and credible.

HOW FUNDING WORKS

Use your Growth and Skills Levy

The Growth and Skills Levy is paid by schools and MATs with an annual payroll over £3 million. That money is held in a digital account and can be drawn down to fund apprenticeship training — whether you’re developing existing staff or bringing in new talent. If your school has a smaller payroll, apprenticeship funding is still available through your local authority, so there’s no barrier to getting started.

FAQs

An apprenticeship is a paid job that combines hands-on work experience with structured learning. Alongside your on-the-job training, you'll spend at least 20% of your working hours on classroom-based learning with Venture Training & Education Ltd, leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

To start an apprenticeship, you'll need an employer willing to take you on — typically a school or Multi-Academy Trust (MAT), where you'll complete your on-the-job training. If a school or MAT is interested in hiring an apprentice, their designated lead should get in touch with us directly to discuss training aligned with our apprenticeship standards and qualifications.

If you are a school, LA or MAT looking to hire an apprentice or an individual that has an employer ready to take you on, do get in touch.

Our apprenticeships are delivered over  12-18 months. Following a structured programme of blended learning, our tutors will delivery sessions that help to support you in developing knowledge, skills and behaviours required to complete your apprenticeship.

The majority of the working week will be spent in school working alongside our education team. 20% of the week will be allocated to theory sessions and practical training days at a designated Venture & Training Education facility. There will also be regular progress reviews held with your tutor and visits to your workplace.

Apprenticeships are fully funded through two methods: either via a levy-paying employer or through the non-levy funding route.

The apprenticeship levy is paid by large employers. Every employer who pays the levy has a digital account where they can access their levy funds to spend on apprenticeship training.

Smaller employers (Non-Levy) – those with a total annual pay bill of less than £3 million – pay just 5% of the cost of their apprenticeship training and the Government pays the rest.

Although very similar, qualifications vary from apprenticeships slightly.

Although we recommend work placements for all of our qualifications, they are achieved by completing designated tasks and assignments to achieve the associated level.

Apprenticeships require 80% of time given to work placements and completion of the standard not only requires the completion of tasks and assignments but also an End Point Assessment (EPA) from an external verifier. End-point assessment (EPA) is the final stage of an apprenticeship. It is an impartial assessment of whether your apprentice has developed the skills, knowledge and behaviours outlined in the apprenticeship standard.

As well as successfully completing the EPA, an apprentice may need to complete, and pass, several additional requirements before completion of the apprenticeship. This might include mandatory English and maths qualifications.

If you're a school or MAT with an annual payroll over £3 million, you'll pay into the Apprenticeship Levy via PAYE and can use those funds, held in your apprenticeship service account, to pay for your apprentice's training with us.

Most schools and smaller MATs fall below this threshold, meaning you're a non-levy employer — in this case, the government covers the majority of training costs, with your school contributing a small percentage alongside.

Funding rules are subject to change, so we always confirm the latest rates and eligibility with you directly when you enquire, ensuring you have accurate, up-to-date costs for your apprenticeship.
